Captive Heart: Hearts In Peril (Episode 14)

Posted by on September 10, 2016.

Helen struggled to regain her composure as she and her friend reached where the men were standing. Beside her, Chioma gaped at the tall man shamelessly.

“Good afternoon, Mr Thomas. Good morning, sir.” Helen greeted both men, avoiding the other man’s gaze. “This is my friend Chioma; I was just seeing her off.”

Lionel smiled, “Good morning, Miss Bassey. And hello, Miss Chioma. I hope your visit was nice.”

“It was, sir. Thank you.” Chioma replied, smiling.

“Won’t you introduce me to these beautiful ladies?” the other man interrupted. His gravelly baritone raised the hairs at the back of Helen’s neck and she groaned mentally. Why was she reacting like a hormone-driven teenager these days?! First, Lionel, now his friend. She needed help.

“Of course. Ladies, this is my bosom friend and business partner, Mr Kelechi Dike. He runs the entire business while I’m not around, Miss Bassey, so if you have any further questions about the consulting matters, this is your man. Kelechi, this is Miss Helen Bassey, who runs my house; so if you have any questions about domestic matters, I guess she’s your woman!”

Helen laughed and extended a palm for a handshake, “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr Dike.”

Kelechi stepped closer, gripping her hand in his, “The pleasure is entirely mine, Miss Bassey. Lionel has mentioned you a few times, but I’m surprised he didn’t say how beautiful you are.”

Helen raised a brow, surprised at his forwardness and the fact that Lionel had mentioned her to his friend. “Um… thank you, Mr Dike…”

“Please, call me Kelechi.” He replied, reluctantly releasing her hand when she tugged it away.

Helen felt her face growing hot as his eyes ran over her. “That will be difficult, but I’ll try… sir.”

Kelechi turned his attention to Chioma and as they began chatting, Helen turned to Lionel, her brow raised. Her boss was smiling, his arms crossed as he leaned against the truck which Helen guessed belonged to his friend. Helen let her eyes run over Lionel briefly. He was wearing jeans and a white t-shirt that fluttered around his body in the warm afternoon breeze. She sighed. Kelechi was good looking, but he could never possess the magnetism in Lionel’s quiet strength. She noticed there was a slight frown on Lionel’s face. Maybe he was embarrassed by his friend’s forwardness. His next words confirmed the idea.

“Forgive my friend, Ladies. He’s an incurable flirt.” Lionel said, shaking his head. “But he’s harmless, I assure you.”

Kelechi laughed. “Kai! You want to pour sand in my garri, right? Do you mean me well at all?”

They all laughed and the ladies said their goodbyes and left the men to talk, as Helen accompanied Chioma to the house gates.

“That is one good looking man!” Chioma said excitedly when they were out of earshot. “Helen, see how he was admiring you. Don’t fall my hand o, better start making moves.”

Helen only shook her head and hugged her friend goodbye. All the way back to the house, she was thoughtful. Kelechi Dike was attractive, but she preferred a stronger, silent type. Like Lionel. Who she could never have, she reminded herself sternly.

Just as she was about to step into the house, she ran into Lionel.

Speak of the devil, she thought.

“Miss Bassey.” He said, stopping her with a slight touch to her wrist. “I see your friend has gone. I hope Mr Dike didn’t cause offence?”

Helen smiled. “Not at all, sir. What woman doesn’t welcome attention?”

She was surprised to see a frown rumple Lionel’s forehead. Why did her reply displease him?

“Of course. He’s handsome and successful, not to mention single. Why wouldn’t you like his attention?” Lionel said with a tight smile. “What do I know? I’ll mind my business next time. I’m just going to the truck to help Kelechi retrieve some papers he forgot in it. Do help me ask him if he needs any refreshments and see to his comfort. Perhaps, since you enjoy his company so much, you could sit with him till I return. Thank you, Miss Bassey.”

Helen gave a quick response, surprise almost strangling the words in her throat as Lionel walked past her hurriedly. He had never spoken to her that curtly before. Why was he annoyed? As she continued on into the house, her eyes widened as another thought occurred to her. Was Lionel jealous?

Kelechi was not in the main living room, so she climbed the stairs. He was probably in the sitting room there; Lionel only took close friends upstairs.

Still thoughtful, Helen got to the first floor and made her way towards where she excited Kelechi to be. She opened the doors and then froze as she saw two people in a close embrace. For a moment, she imagined it was Bernard fondling one of his numerous girlfriends, and then her brain correctly interpreted what she was seeing.

Miss Bukola Deinde was wrapped in Mr Kelechi Dike’s arms. And were they…? Goodness!

Helen quickly retraced her steps, careful not to make a sound. The image she had just seen was burned into her mind. Bukola was kissing her fiancé’s friend right in his living room!
