Captive Heart: Hearts In Peril (Episode 30)

Captive

The next few hours were a blur of activity in the Thomas home. Lionel called the entire house staff together and apprised them of the situation, asking if any of them had information about Bernard’s whereabouts, while Bukola listened on with her mouth open in shock. Unfortunately, none of them had anything concrete to say, except for the fact that just before Bernard zoomed off in his small Toyota Corolla, he had been making frantic phone calls. Lionel immediately called the police, alerting them to the fact that Bernard was on the run. They assured him they would immediately start a search for the young man and his car at every point of departure in the state.

“Lionel, isn’t calling the police a bit hasty here?” Bukola asked. They were in Lionel’s office, where he had just ended the call and was pacing the length of the room, while Bukola sat perched on the edge of his desk. Lionel threw a look at her as he walked past her. “Hasty? He planned to kidnap me and then sent armed men to hurt Miss Bassey because of what she knew, and you say I’m hasty? I don’t think so. I only just wonder why she didn’t tell me about this issue on time, threats or not.”

“Probably because I told her not to.” Lionel stopped pacing and stared at her. “What?!” Bukola shrugged, looking a bit shamefaced. “Well, I may as well confess before she tells you. I found out about the kidnap plot too… and I told her not to tell you yet.” Lionel threw up his arms in consternation. “Lord save me from women! Why would you do that, Bukola? Miss Bassey has been a bit jittery since i returned from the United States and now I know why. But you… you never showed any signs that you were keeping any secrets. That was cold and I find it a bit disturbing.”

Bukola slid of the desk and went to Lionel. “Listen, dear, this whole thing is a lot more complex than you think it is. Bernard is greedy, yes, but he’s not vicious. There’s someone else behind…”

“Kelechi.” Lionel cut in. He frowned as she jumped, startled. “Helen told me that as well. You also knew that? For goodness sake, Bukola!” She fell back from him, looking thoughtful. “I’m surprised she mentioned Kelechi’s involvement. I did warn her that he was very vicious.” Lionel shook his head. “That’s the funny thing. I know Kelechi is a womaniser and can be a bit selfish and unprincipled about getting his way, but this surprised me. Kelechi is corrupt and occasionally mean, yes, but vicious? That part worries me. I’ve known him for years, remember?”

Bukola shook her head. “Now you need to trust me, Lionel. I went through his phone a few times; I saw suspicious text messages and emails…” Lionel gave a surprised laugh. “Nobody gets near Kelechi’s phones, Bukky. He’s paranoid about internet fraud and watches his phones like a hawk. He hardly ever lets his guard down.”

“Except when it comes to women, right?” Bukola said smugly. “Well, am I not even more than a woman, my love? Trust me, I distracted him.” A frown furrowed Lionel’s’ brow, “I’m not quite sure i like the sound of that, Bukky. How, exactly?”

She hesitated, and then shrugged. “Look, Lionel, the important thing is now you know. If they get Bernard I’m sure he will confess to this. Meanwhile, you can’t accuse Kelechi of anything without proof. It all hinges on Bernard.” Lionel gave a small, bitter laugh. “Bernard is family and I was only giving him the benefit of doubt by trying to talk to him first before i told the police about him. Kelechi is not family. I already told the police about him before I left the hospital. They were already on their way to his house.”

Bukola’s big eyes widened in alarm.“What?!”

Lionel crossed his arms. “Yes, dear. I’m just waiting for the call confirming they have detained him as a suspect. It’s a good thing I sent them after him over an hour ago, just after Helen told me. If he had plans to run like Bernard did…” “He probably has already fled.” Bukola said with conviction. “Maybe he called Bernard to warn him to run as well…”

Lionel’s phone rang loudly, the sound making them both jump. He made a gesture at Bukola, and whispered, “It’s the police.” before he picked the phone call. “Hello…. Yes, this is… what? Say again?…Of course. I understand. I’ll be right there.”

Lionel turned to Bukola, a look of shock on his face. “What’s wrong, dear?” she asked, moving closer to him. “What happened now?”

“The police checked the office first, and then went to Kennedy’s home to arrest him. You were wrong, Bukky. He didn’t run. They found him.” Bukola sat down slowly on the office couch. “They did? I hope this is the smart thing to do, Lionel. I just don’t think they should just arrest him like that…”

“They didn’t arrest him.” Lionel continued, settling down beside her on the couch. He looked stunned.

“Then what…?”

“They found him in his house, Bukky.” Lionel said with a stunned look on his face. “Kelechi is dead.”
