Captive Heart: Hearts In Peril (Episode 34)

Posted by on September 22, 2016.

Captive

Lionel was struck between a rock and a hard place. He was confused about what to do next. The conversations of everyone around him were an intelligible buzz as he hurried out of Kelechi’s house with Bukola in tow, following Inspector Babalola. His mental gears were spinning furiously.

Where should he go next? Should he follow Inspector Babalola to the police station to listen in on Bernard’s interrogation? Or was it more sensible to go to Helen in the hospital where she had been admitted? He was afraid for her safety, despite the two bodyguards watching over her and Joe-B. The men who had ambushed her were well-armed professionals. Two bodyguards may not be enough protection.

Bukola nudged him. “What are you thinking about, Lionel?”

“Helen.” He murmured before he could stop himself. His fiancée’s eyes narrowed and he hurriedly continued as they stepped out of the house. “I mean I’m concerned about Miss Bassey’s safety. More of those armed men may go to hurt her.”

Outside, they squinted up at the afternoon sun burning in the sky. In the distance, they could see Lionel’s bodyguard standing beside his car, head turning slowly as his shaded eyes examined the area for any threats. He nodded at them and stuck a thumb up, signalling everything was okay and they began to walk towards him.

Compared to the artificially cooled interior of Kelechi’s house, the afternoon heat was stifling. Bukola began to fan herself with her hand as they walked towards the parked police jeep and Lionel’s Mercedes. By the time they arrived at the vehicles, her green t-shirt was plastered to her body with sweat. Lionel was too distracted to notice, but all the policemen in the compound stared in admiration at her ample bosom and long legs clad in the white shorts.

Over the fence, more eyes peeped as bystanders tried to get a view of the crowded compound. A muted sound of amazement came from the street as Kelechi’s body was lifted into an ambulance in the middle of the compound. Bukola shuddered at the sight and turned to face her fiancé.

“I don’t understand how people are so interested in gaping at dead bodies or other disasters. Very bizarre fascination.” She noticed Lionel wasn’t listening and swatted his upper arm crossly. “Hello?! Earth to Lionel! I don’t get why you’re so worried about Miss Bassey anyway! Aren’t there two bodyguards there with her? Sounds safe enough to me.”

“I know the men from that security firm are good, Mr Thomas.” Inspector Babalola agreed. “Their reputation precedes them and they have the respect of the police force. We’ve had reason to work with them a few times. So I think she’s very safe.”

Lionel nodded, but a frown still lingered on his face as he reached his car and opened the back door. Bukola sighed in exasperation and threw up her arms.

“Fine! If you’re so worried about her, let me help. You can go with the police Inspector to interrogate Bernard. I volunteer to go to the hospital with the new bodyguard. One more bodyguard should be adequate protection for Miss Bassey till you can get the security firm to send more, right?”

Lionel stared at Bukola in surprise. He didn’t expect her to be so charitable towards Helen, or concerned for her safety. She had been declaring the young woman to be a suspect all day. Why the sudden change of heart?

“Miss Deinde’s suggestion is a good one, Mr Thomas.” Inspector Babalola said, pausing before he entered the police jeep. “I actually believe you would be safer with us, as you are still a target for a possible kidnapping. Your fiancée and new bodyguard can join in to watch Miss Bassey while you call to send more bodyguards there, if it will ease your mind. If Miss Bassey has woken up, I’m sure she will appreciate a familiar female face.”

Lionel nodded and clasped Bukola’s hand gratefully. “Thank you. I know you don’t really like her, but…”

“I’ll watch her.” Bukola shrugged. “It’s obviously important to you, so I’ll do it despite my feelings about that fact.”

They shared a silent look that spoke volumes. Lionel was convinced that Bukola suspected the depth of his feelings for Helen, but he could see in her eyes that she had resigned herself to the situation. Their relationship had been rudely shaken in the past few days. After this whole incident was over, they would have to re-evaluate how things stood between them.

“Mr Thomas?” Inspector Babalola said with a trace of impatience. He gestured towards the rear of the police vehicle. “We need to get to the police station now.”

Lionel nodded and squeezed Bukola’s hand silently before he pecked her on her cheek, then clambered after the inspector into the rear of the jeep.

It was time to finally see Bernard and join the police to ask him a few hard questions. And the answers needed to be good, or he was going to cause his cousin a lot of pain for putting Helen in harm’s way.
