Captive Heart: Hearts In Peril (Episode 38)

Posted by on September 24, 2016.

Helen came back to consciousness slowly, leaving her eyes closed while she tried to remember why her head was aching so much. Her last memories returned slowly- the ride to the airport to pick Bukola’s parents, the ambush and the accident, riding in the ambulance with an injured Joe-b, talking to Lionel in the hospital and then… darkness. She must have passed out. She opened her eyes, squinting at the white ceiling above her for a moment before she decided she must be lying in a hospital bed.

As she wondered what had woken her up, she heard the sound again. A female voice asking someone who they were.

She turned her neck, careful not to jar her aching head and saw Bukola standing by the door of the hospital room. Someone else was standing closer to her, and she squinted, straining to focus on who it was…

“Chioma.” She said weakly, as she recognised her friend. Who had told her about the accident and the hospital? “Is that you?”

The two women turned towards her. Bukola walked further into the room, a look of suspicion gathered on her forehead like a storm cloud.

Chioma lifted Helen’s head gently and propped the pillow she had been holding under her neck as she smiled down at her friend. “Oh look, you’re awake.” she said cheerily. “How are you feeling? I came as soon as I could…”

“Chioma?” Bukola interrupted, rolling the name on her tongue like it was something bitter. “Helen, do you know this person ? Who is she? And why was she trying to hurt you?”

“Hurt me?” Helen asked in confusion, wondering if she had somehow damaged her ears in the accident. “What do you mean?”

“What are you talking about?” Chioma asked, a look of surprise on her face. “I wasn’t trying to do anything.”

Bukola scoffed. “What is all this rubbish? I saw you holding a pillow over Helen’s face. Helen, is this your friend?” she clapped her hands together slowly. Clap, clap, clap. “Hmmmmm! Birds of a feather o! Come, Miss Chioma, are you her accomplice? Trying to clean up loose ends eh? What the hell is going on here?”

Helen stared at Bukola in utter confusion, then turned to Chioma, who returned the look and then shrugged. “What is she saying? I have no idea..” she picked up the jug on the cupboard beside the bed and began to pour water into a plastic cup for Helen. “You look thirsty; let me get you some water.”

Helen wondered why Chioma was acting so nonchalant. Wasn’t she hearing the things Bukola was saying? She pushed the cup of water aside weakly as Chioma tried to bring it to her mouth. She needed to focus on what Lionel’s fiancée had been saying. Why did she think Chioma had been trying to hurt her?

“Fine. I’m calling the guards.” Bukola said suddenly, turning back towards the door. “They can sort this all out.”

Helen watched, frozen by shock, as Chioma quickly flung the water in the jug in Bukola’s direction. The other woman was immediately drenched in cold water, from the top of her weave, down to her green t-shirt and white shorts. As the other woman stopped, gasping and trying to push the water out of her eyes, Chioma took a few more steps forward and swung the jug towards her head.

There was a meaty clunk and Bukola fell to the floor without a sound.

The entire thing happened in just a few seconds, but to Helen it seemed like it happened in slow motion. She sat up slowly in the bed as Chioma prodded at Bukola’s still body with one sandaled foot. The woman on the floor lolled bonelessly, blood seeping from the point where the water jug had met her head. Helen watched in confused amazement, unable to talk, as Chioma bent down and dragged Bukola into the bathroom.

“Chioma.” Helen called out in a strangled voice when Chioma came out of the bathroom and shut it behind her. “What the hell is going on here?! Why did you hit Bukola?”

Her friend shushed her, cocking her head as though listening to see if anyone had noticed the noise and was about to come in. Satisfied that no one was, she hurried to where her handbag was laying on the floor and picked it up, rummaging in it.

“Damn it, Chioma! You better tell me something because right now I don’t even know what to think!” Helen said as loudly as her sore throat allowed her to. She felt like she was caught in a feverish nightmare. She had known Chioma for years, and was struggling to reconcile the violent act she had just seen with the gentle young woman who was her friend. “You’re scaring me. What’s going on?”

Chioma pulled the chair closer to the bed and sat in it. Calmly, she removed a gun from her handbag and placed it in front of her. Helen recoiled, and stared at the gun in growing horror as it lay there, black and shiny as a deadly mamba, poised to strike.

“What’s going on?” Chioma said, a sinister smile stretching her lips. “What’s going is that I’m here to kill you, darling. You know what they say- If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself…”
