Captive Heart: Hearts In Peril (Episode 39)

Posted by on September 27, 2016.

Helen stared at Chioma, and shock held her in a grip so tight that she could hardly breathe. She stared at her friend who hated her and meant to hurt her. What had changed between them? When had her friend become this violent person and how come she had never noticed the sinister change?

Helen tried to focus past the pain in her head. The bathroom where Chioma had pulled Bukola into was ominously silent. Was Bukola badly hurt or even dead? If she didn’t play her cards right, that could be her fate soon. She had to gather her wits and deal with this situation as best as she could.

Her life depended on it.

“Chioma, I don’t understand.” She said hesitantly, her eyes flitting from the glistening gun on her bed to her friend’s face. “Why are you doing this? What have i done to you?”

Chioma laughed and leaned back in her seat, but her eyes were watchful and Helen knew if she made any sudden moves, her friend would grab the gun in the blink of an eye.

“It’s not about what you did to me, Helen.” Chioma said, her eyes gleaming with malice. “Don’t flatter yourself; you haven’t done anything to affect my life one way or another. Your insipid goodness is annoying and your eternal optimism gets on my nerves every time I spend more than ten minutes around you, but no, you haven’t done anything to me. I just intensely dislike your lack of ambition.”

Helen felt the sting of the other woman’s words. She wondered how she could have been so naïve. How could a person dislike her so much and she hadn’t even noticed?

“Then why?” she asked, keeping the hurt she was feeling out of her voice. “Why are you doing this?”

“I just want to make money, girl.” Chioma laughed. “You were simply a means to an end. A way to get to your precious Lionel Thomas. All that money sitting there and you weren’t showing any interest; just forming good girl like say dem swear for you. See, I no come this world to suffer, you hear?”

Helen just sat there on the hospital bed, shivering as fear and the air conditioning raised goose bumps on her skin while Chioma kept talking.

“This whole thing was a piece of cake. During my visits to you at the Thomas mansion, it was easy to get Bernard’s phone number because the idiot couldn’t resist flirting with me. I started chatting with him on Whatsapp using a different phone number from the one you both knew. He was flattered at the idea of a strange girl being interested in him.”

There was a noise in the corridor outside the room and Chioma paused, turning her head to look at the door. For one wild moment, Helen considered grabbing the gun while Chioma was turned away, and maybe hitting her on the head with it. The thought of such a violent action made her heart pound and she hesitated for a moment. It was one moment too long. Before she could lean forward, Chioma turned back towards her.

Chioma looked at her with suspicion, her eyes darting to the gun between them. “How did you convince Bernard to join the kidnap plan?” Helen asked quickly, to distract Chioma.

The other woman smiled and then leaned forward to pick up the gun. Helen stiffened, but Chioma only laid the gun in her lap, within easier reach and far away from Helen.

She smiled again, knowingly, but answered Helen’s last question as though nothing had happened. “It was very easy to push the idiot into the plan to kidnap his rich cousin. Just like me, and unlike you, Bernard wants the good things of life at any cost.

”He told me about Kelechi Dike’s siphoning of the company funds and we used that to force him to bankroll the plan.” Chioma shrugged. “Of course they both thought it was just going to be a simple kidnapping, but I had no intention of leaving any witnesses alive. You included, when I found out you knew about the plan.

“How do you think you are going to get away with this, Chioma?” Helen asked desperately. She could feel her time running out; she had to keep the other woman talking.

Chioma seemed to read her mind. “I see you’re trying to kill time. Don’t bother. The hired thugs I paid are already here to take care of your bodyguards the way they took care of Mr Kelechi Dike after I made him transfer the bulk of his money to me. I can’t get Lionel’s money anymore, thanks to you, but his friend’s money will do for now. ”

“You won’t succeed.” Helen said, and tried to raise herself further up in the bed. Her arms were weak and she fell back on her pillow, her head pounding with pain. Chioma rose up from her seat with the gun gripped in her fist. The weapon looked very strange in the woman’s hand, but her small palm caressed it with an intimacy that spoke of practiced use. One manicured nail curled around the trigger guard and Helen’s heart thundered in her chest. “The police and Lionel will still get you!”

“The phone SIM card i used to communicate with Bernard was registered in Bukola’s name and the police are already on their way here to arrest her.” Chioma grinned. “When they get here, they will find the bodyguards dead, as well as you and Bukola with guns in your hands. The conclusion will be that she and her hired thugs killed the bodyguards, she came in here to kill you, and then you shot each other while her thugs fled.”

Fear filled Helen as she realized Chioma had thought her entire plan through. All this while her best friend had been lurking in her life like a green snake in green grass, hiding in plain sight. No one would ever suspect her.

A sudden noise came from the corridor outside the room. There were shouts and a few gunshots, and Chioma smiled, raising the gun and pointing it at Helen. “I believe my boys are here, Helen. Any last words?”
