Captive Heart: Hearts In Peril (Episode 4)

Posted by on September 8, 2016.

Helen was teetering between mixed emotions of dread and excitement.

The past week had been a hectic one; full of work and frenzied preparation for the arrival of Mr Lionel Thomas from the United States of America. She was determined to live up to his expectations of her, so every ‘t’ had to be crossed and every ‘i’ had to be dotted. The house staff had worked tirelessly to meet her demand for perfection, and a few tempers had been rubbed raw, but she had achieved her goal. The house was ready for the arrival of her employer, and she was certain he would appreciate the work they had all put in.

Her only problem and concern was Bernard. Thoughts of the phone call she had overheard kept roiling around in her head, but she had still been unable to come up with a plan to take care of the problem.

The object of her concern was currently lounging in the living room with his friends, raised voices indicating that they had imbibed most of the alcoholic contents of the bottles in front of them. At least Bernard had made an effort to freshen up and look presentable before his cousin arrived. His face had been shaven and his hair tamed.

Helen walked past them and made her way out of the house, looking for fresh air. She found it outside, in the breezy front courtyard. She inspected the environment quickly; every parked car was sparkling and every stray leaf had been picked. The house was ready for her bosses’ arrival.

She felt a frisson of excitement at the thought of his arrival. For some unknown reason, he had really been invading her thoughts recently. And it was no thanks to her friend Chioma, who had decided to go on a matchmaking spree.

She recalled their phone conversation that morning…

“The big day is here, right?” Chioma teased when the call connected. “Prince Charming is finally coming in on his flying chariot.”

Helen laughed, “Seriously, Chioma. Stop it o. Mr Lionel Thomas is just my boss and nothing else.”

“Hmmm! After the conversation you told me about last time between you guys? Your story may turn out to be like that of Cinderella, because it sounds like that man may like you.”

“Chioma!” Helen gasped. “Please stop planting ideas in my head. We only have a business relationship abeg o!

“Stranger things have happened, girl! It won’t be a bad thing. What’s not to like? You’re intelligent, beautiful and resourceful; and he’s not getting any younger. It sounds like a good match to me.”

“Madam Matchmaker, please carry your wahala and go. This one is way out of my league.” Helen laughed. “We’re not living in a fairy-tale, my dear.”

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed abeg.” Chioma replied, giggling. “Anything can happen.”

Anything can happen.

Helen mused over those words. Even though she had laughed at her friend and refused to take her seriously, the seed had been planted in her head. She had begun to think of her boss as ‘Lionel’ and last night he had played a role in a feverishly romantic dream she had. She shook her head ruefully. She, an adult, had developed a crush on her boss who she had met only two or three times. God help her.

Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the security man opening the gates of the mansion. A black jeep slid into the compound, its engine purring soundlessly. The car was unfamiliar, so it definitely wasn’t the one she had sent to the airport to get Mr Thomas. She wondered who it was.

As she began to walk towards the car, puzzled, one of the car doors opened and the longest legs she had ever seen emerged. They were very fair and clad in a pair of awe-inspiring stilettos.

An amazing body followed the legs out of the car and Helen had to hold back a gasp. The woman who had just come out of the car was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. She was tall and fair, and long hair parted around a flawless face, with big eyes and luscious lips. Her blue gown hugged her in all the right places as she tugged it below her knees.

Helen simply gaped at her, stunned. Who was this?

She heard a laugh behind her and turned to see Bernard smiling.

“Gorgeous, isn’t she?” he murmured, as the woman threw a sparkling smile at the security man and walked towards them, her graceful legs scissoring in her short blue gown. “That may be your madam in the nearest future.”

Helen’s jaw dropped further. “What?!”

“That’s Lionel’s fiancée, Bukola.” Bernard smirked. “Drop-dead gorgeous, isn’t she? He’s coming back to start the wedding arrangements.”

Helen felt her heart plummet, and she plastered a smile on her face as she turned back to face the approaching woman.

So much for my fantasies, she thought wryly. With this one, I don’t stand a chance…
