Captive Heart: Hearts In Peril (Episode 42)

Posted by on September 27, 2016.

The roar of the gun startled the three bodyguards crouching in the corridor outside the hospital room. They exchanged worried looks.

“I have to get in that room, guys.” Joe-b said grimly. “Cover me.”

Melody and Stone nodded, and then peeped out from their hiding positions. A couple of bullets immediately greeted their heads. They ducked, and then waited till the gunfire stopped. When there was a brief silence, Melody stood up quickly and started shooting blindly in the direction where the gunshots had been coming from.

Stone joined him, and the gunmen at the other end of the corridor took cover. Joe-B used the opportunity to make a quick dash to the door of the hospital room, using one of his huge shoulders like a battering ram to barge into the room. The door shuddered and gave way to his bodily assault and he ran into the room, with his gun raised.

He stopped and stared at the scene before him. The smell of gunpowder filled the air, pinching his nostrils and his heart plummeted as he saw Helen, supine in the hospital bed. Chioma lay on the floor, looking like a boneless doll. Her head lolled to the side, and he could see blood seeping sluggishly from a cut on her head. Joe lowered his gun when he noticed a gun lying close to the unconscious woman’s hand. It was obvious that the threat had been neutralized.

Bukola stood over Chioma’s body with a cracked water jug in her hand, breathing fast. Her weave was matted to the side of her head with the blood from a wound. Beneath her shirt, soaked with blood and water, her chest rose and fell as she breathed harshly.

“I cannot believe that girl hit me from behind.” Bukola fumed, her voice shaking with rage. “I don’t even know who the heck she is!”

Joe-B hurried to the bed, where Helen laid, her face wan with shock.

“Where did the bullet hit her? Helen! Where are you hurt?” he leaned over and shook her gently, eyes running over her body. “Helen, say something.”

To his relief, Helen blinked slowly, turning to him. She seemed dazed. “Joe-B?” she said, stuttering. “You’re awake.” The bodyguard tamped down his frustration. “Were you hurt?”

She stared at him for a moment and then started to giggle. “Well, there you have it.” Bukola said dryly. “She’s gone bonkers.”

“It’s probably shock.” Joe-B said, looking into Helen’s eyes with concern. “I’m just worried she has been hurt…”

Helen shook her head, trying to stop herself from laughing. “No, No, I’m fine. The gunshot hit the pillow.”

Joe-B looked and saw the smoking hole just inches from where Helen’s head lay. His heart thundered at how close she had been to dying. If Chioma’s hand had moved a little to the side as the gun discharged, Helen wouldn’t have been lying with a smile on her face. She would have had a bullet in her head.

Helen was still laughing hysterically, tears running down her face. “Oh Joe-B, you just look so ridiculous in that hospital gown, with all those muscles…”

Joe-B looked down at himself and then threw a rueful glance at Helen. Behind him, Bukola began to giggle, the jug in her hand hanging limply as she stared at Joe-B’s hairy legs and knees sticking out from beneath the short hospital gown. As the two women’s giggles increased in volume, Joe-b helplessly joined them, his baritone laugh making the shutters of the closed window rattle.

When Lionel burst into the room a few moments later, he met them that way. Helen lying in the bed with tears streaming down her face as she laughed, Joe-B guffawing in his short gown and Bukola giggling in her blood-soaked shirt.

He paused and stared at them all, head swivelling from person to person and then resting on Chioma, lying on the floor.

“I’m almost afraid to ask what happened here.” He said dryly, crossing his arms as his emotions ranged from relief to confusion.

Outside, the police had managed to get ahead of the situation. The gunmen were apprehended and led to the vans in handcuffs, while cautious and injured hospital staff and other people trooped back cautiously onto the premises.

Chioma regained consciousness, only to meet a pair of handcuffs waiting for her. A cheer went up as she and the other gunmen clambered onto the police vans and the vehicles roared off.

In the hospital, Helen lay in her bed like the doctor insisted. She felt safe because Joe-B lounged outside her door, refusing to go back to his room until he was a hundred percent sure she was safe.

She knew Bukola had been admitted in the room beside her and that Lionel was with his fiancée. Feelings of jealousy rebelled in her heart, but she knew Lionel had to stay where he was committed.

It was time to figure out how to break up this love triangle. Lionel had to decide who had his heart, and he had to decide soon.
