Captive Heart: Hearts In Peril (Episode 46) FINAL EPISODE

Posted by on September 29, 2016.

All the way to the Thomas Mansion, Helen couldn’t concentrate on anything.

She started off by leaving her house and walking a little distance away before she remembered she hadn’t locked her doors. On her second attempt, after locking the front door, she realized she was walking off without her bag.

She almost boarded a taxi headed in the wrong direction and when she finally reached her destination, she reached up, patted her head and discovered that she hadn’t wrapped her hair up into its usual formal bun. She shrugged. She was going to stop working soon, anyway. There was no point worrying about her appearance that strictly anymore.

She walked thoughtfully towards her small office, hair bouncing around her shoulders with each click of her sensible heels. Bukola’s visit had been unsettling, and yet intriguing.

She wondered why Lionel and Bukola had called off their engagement. She wondered who had called it off. But most especially she pondered over Bukola’s last words to her.

I suggest you go over to that house today and stop the man you love from walking out of your life.

How did Bukola know she had feelings for Lionel? She had tried her best to hide them, but apparently, she hadn’t quite succeeded.

Her steps slowed as she walked past his office, but she didn’t stop. How could she stop a full grown man from doing what he wanted to do? By telling him that she loved him? She chuckled to herself as she opened her office door and stepped in, imagining how that scenario would turn out. Probably not very nicely.

“I’m glad to see recent events haven’t totally robbed you of your cheer, Miss Bassey.” A voice interrupted her reverie.

She jumped so hard that she almost dropped her handbag. Flailing, she finally caught it a few inches from the carpeted floor. Bent over in that awkward position, unbound hair falling over her cheeks, she peered up at Lionel, perched on the edge of her desk.
He watched her with his arms crossed, lips twitching in amusement. His strong arms were shown off to perfection in the Ankara shirt he had paired with black trousers. Her eyes travelled down his body and rested on his feet, which were bare. He wiggled his toes and curled them into the downy rug when he noticed where her gaze had settled.

“Sometimes, I walk around barefoot, Miss Bassey.” He explained, looking a bit embarrassed. “But mostly at night. I guess i wasn’t thinking clearly when I left my office and walked here. Old habits.”

Helen slowly straightened up, brushing her hair back. Seeing him in his bare feet made her feel marginally better about leaving her hair down. The day seemed like one made for breaking rules.

She walked over to the desk and slowly placed her bag on the corner farthest from where Lionel was perched. Still, his unique scent filled her nostrils and she had to stop herself from swallowing nervously.

“That’s fine, Mr Thomas.” She said, glad to hear her voice was steady. “It’s your house, so you make the rules.”

He smiled. “You’ve been running my house for years, Miss Bassey. Trust me, you make the rules.”

She smiled politely, but in her head she felt like screaming. Why were they chit-chatting like this when there was an undercurrent of tension tugging at them both?

Lionel uncurled from the desk, standing up and sliding his hands into his pockets. “I have some news, Miss Bassey. I changed my travel plans, so I’ll be leaving tomorrow.”

Helen nodded and looked away. “I promise to leave the running of the house to someone very capable, Mr Thomas. Whoever replaces me will…”
“You knew.” Lionel cut in, frowning. He removed his hands from his pockets and walked towards her. “There’s only one way you could know. Bukola told you.”

Helen looked up helplessly at him when he reached her, her brain stuttering as his scent surrounded her fully. She struggled to think as he kept talking.

“What did she say to you, Helen? Did she upset you?” Lionel asked, his frown deepening. He gripped her upper arms gently. “Tell me.”

“She said you were leaving and that the engagement was off.” Helen managed to say. Her skin tingled where his hands touched her. She decided to be bold. “She didn’t say why. Why did you call it off?”

Lionel’s face gentled. A smile slowly blossomed on his face and his touch turned into a caress, as he drew her closer to him. “Why do you think, you silly woman?”

Helen couldn’t believe her senses. Was it possible that the engagement had been called off because of her?

“I don’t just want a beautiful woman as my wife. I want someone honest and hardworking, intelligent and most of all, kind.” Lionel said, drawing her closer. “It helps if she already knows how to run my house.”

Helen stared at him, joy slowly filling her heart. Was she hearing him right? Did he love her too? But even if he did… “Lionel, you’re leaving tomorrow…..”

Before she could complete the sentence, he leaned in closer and kissed her.

It was everything her feverish imagination had told her it would be. His mouth claimed hers possessively and yet gently and she felt like if his arms weren’t holding her down, she would float away. One of his palms slid around to the back of her neck, and stayed there as he plundered her lips.

When he broke the kiss, she felt a sense of loss although he didn’t move away, but rested his forehead against hers.

“I love you, Helen, and I don’t want to leave you. Ever. Tell me to stay and I will. Forever.” He whispered, his warm breath fanning her face. “Just say it.”

And in that moment, she knew everything would be fine. They had survived deadly secrets and the danger that had come with them. Fate owed them a smooth course from now on. She could clearly picture their future together; it was the perfect conclusion to her Cinderella story and she couldn’t wait for the rest of her life to begin. It only needed one word.

“Stay.” She breathed.
