Captive Heart: Hearts In Peril (Episode 8)

Posted by on September 9, 2016.

Helen looked past Bukola, at Lionel, and wondered how she would even begin to tell them of Bernard’s kidnap plot. How could she convince them to believe and trust her word over Bernard’s, if he was confronted?

Bukola’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “Well, if there’s no specific threat, I really don’t think there’s any need to move around with professional security. That may even draw the attention we should rather avoid.”

The woman slid off the desk and sat on Lionel’s lap, “Besides dear, Bernard has assured me this area where you built your home is very secure. Bernard can even follow you around, and watch your interests. After all he’s family. That’s who you should trust most.”

Helen listened to Bukola’s words in shock. Bernard was trustworthy? Obviously, this woman didn’t know him as well as Helen did.

Lionel looked thoughtful as he weighed his options. Helen crossed her fingers and hoped he would take a wise decision. His very life could depend on it.
“One bodyguard.” Lionel finally said, firmly. When Bukola tried to protest, he pressed a kiss to her lips. “Just one. You both have valid points, but it would be silly to behave like I’m untouchable. So, I’ll have to take Miss Bassey’s advice. I’ll call my friend’s security firm and hire one bodyguard for the duration of my stay.”

Bukola rolled her eyes. “Alright. If you say so, darling.”

Helen felt relief flood through her body. She still felt one bodyguard wasn’t enough, but she would take this little victory over a total loss. One bodyguard might be enough to thwart Bernard’s plans.

As she rose to leave, she was surprised by the look Bukola threw in her direction. It was a frown that had changed her pretty face completely. For a moment, the expression made the woman look ugly. Helen was shocked. Why was Bukola so angry?

She hastily excused herself and left the office, thinking about Bukola. Maybe Lionel’s fiancée was angry that he had preferred the advice of an employee over that of hers. Or was she jealous that Lionel would take another woman’s opinion seriously?

Helen shook her head as she headed back to her office. Whichever one it was, she had just discovered that Miss Bukola Deinde could be spiteful. She would have to be careful not to get on her bad side again.

Two days later, Helen finally got a chance to get out of the house and see to her own personal business.

Her friend, Chioma, was having a birthday party and Helen headed straight there from Mr Lionel Thomas’ home. After the party, she would finally return to her own house. She missed her bed and she was sure it missed her too.

The party at her friend’s home was fun. The house was full of old friends and acquaintances and Helen felt pretty as she received many compliments for the short yellow dress she had chosen to wear. After days spent around the physically flawless Bukola Deinde, she was happy for the boost to her self-esteem.

“I’m sure you’re exaggerating how that woman looks.” Chioma had said, when Helen described Bukola’s intimidating body. “No one can be that fine without plastic surgery jare. She’s being living abroad, right? So it’s possible”

“Well, if she had plastic surgery, her surgeon is damn good.” Helen replied. “Her body is fantastic.”

“It doesn’t mean Lionel might not like your own tiny booty.” Chioma said cheekily. “Love is blind you know.”

Helen sighed in exasperation. “First off, my booty is not tiny. It’s just okay, thank you very much. Second, Lionel is engaged. Spell it with me…. E-N-G-A-G-E-D. So he is not free to like any other booty but Bukola’s. That’s how you planted fantasies in my head and I couldn’t concentrate on my work anymore. Don’t bring your wahala again abeg.”
Chioma laughed. “Alright, alright! I’ll stop saying it. But I won’t stop hoping, because I think you and your boss would make a good love story. Oga falls in love with housemaid… awwww!”

Helen scowled playfully at her friend. “If it wasn’t your birthday, I would smack that smirk off your face. And if you call me a housemaid again, I will do it. Don’t just try me.”

“Time to cut the cake!” Someone yelled over the loud music.

Helen pushed Chioma in that direction. “That’s you they are calling, Miss Celebrant. Give me a moment, let me check my phone messages.”

When Chioma left, Helen pulled out her phone from her purse. It had been vibrating incessantly with messages and notifications from her social media accounts, so she decided to take a moment to see if any of the house staff at Lionel’s home had sent any urgent messages.

She saw a text message from a strange number and clicked on it.

Helen’s hands began to shake. What kind of message was this?

What had she gotten herself into?
