SUNDAY SKETCH NEWSPAPER – 19th December, 1993.

Residents of Bida were two days ago thrown into shock when a woman identified as Nnafuka Aregbesola jumped off a window and died instantly after poisoning a one year old child, killing her husband’s friend and also attempting to throw her husband off a window.
It was gathered that the deceased who is wife to a lecturer in the Federal Polytechnic, Bida suddenly became embittered and unhappy. According to her husband, Doctor Aregbesola, Nnafuka started developing strange character when their baby, Seun, passed. The doctor of banking and finance explained that he and his wife had stayed seven years without child. They were praying and hoping till they were blessed with that baby. But without warning the child died just two months after she was put to bed. Doctor Aregbesola, who is receiving treatment in the hospital because of his wife’s attempt to tear out his eyes, also told Sunday Sketch that it was likely that his wife, Nnafuka, killed their two month old baby when her strange character, which he describes as ‘madness’, started newly.
The trouble started after their baby’s burial. Doctor Aregbesola said that he had instructed his wife to go and see a counselor in Minna so that she could overcome the effects which losing their child seemed to have on her. The man, however, was surprised to find out later that his wife had gone to Minna on another mission which was to murder the one year old son of one Doctor Abiola. Her wife also returned without her friend, Helen, who had accompanied her to the counseling appointment.

The academic was only informed by his friend, Malik, that Helen had died in a car accident along Bida-Minna road and his wife was in the hospital. When they arrived at the hospital, he discovered that she was physically alright but her mental and emotional situation had deteriorated much.
“Going by my friend’s suggestion, I agreed that we should take her to a psychiatrist. I was not even aware of what she had done in Minna, and that the police were already involved,” Doctor Aregbesola said. Things got out of hands as they made the attempt to take her to a psychiatrist. He narrated that his wife struck his friend at the back of the head with a chair, leading to his death; and then tried to jump off the window.
In the hospital, in the company of friends and associates, an emotional Doctor Aregbesola with a bandage over his eyes said, “I intervened. She was still my wife after all she had done. I held her there on that window, trying to convince her to calm down. Before I knew it she attacked me and then jumped.”

When asked about the state of Doctor Aregbesola’s eyes, a doctor at the hospital who pleaded anonymity said that they were hoping his eyes would recover fully but he doubted if they will be as good as they were before the unfortunate incident.
The authorities of the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, where Helen worked as a junior lecturer released a statement yesterday, condoling with Helen’s family. They regretted that she passed after her return from India where she had gone to do her Master’s. The statement also sympathized with Doctor Aregbesola on the death of his wife, Nnafuka.
At the time of filing this report, Sunday Sketch could not reach the mother of the poisoned baby, Doctor Abiola, as her family insisted that she had been flown overseas since the occurrence of the event. The family, notwithstanding, revealed that Doctor Abiola’s son died by drinking a toilet disinfectant which the culprit had forced down his throat.
“At first, we thought that we should accuse the maid,” said a member of the family who pleaded anonymity. “But the girl explained that the killer walked up to her where she was with the baby and asked her to go outside and check if her car was locked. She said she returned after doing what she asked only to find out that the killer was no longer there. It was when the baby started vomiting blood that she suspected a foul play and called the attention of the people nearby.”

The police spokesperson told pressmen yesterday that so far evidence is pointing to the direction that Nnafuka killed Doctor Abiola’s baby and Malik, his husband’s friend. He said that it was not clear if she was in any way involved in the planning or execution of the auto crash that claimed her friend, Helen’s life. On the cause of Nnafuka’s death the spokesperson confirmed that autopsy carried out on her revealed that she died from a broken neck. She also incurred broken ribs, one of which the doctors said cut into her vital organs.
Meanwhile, as the police continue in their efforts to reach late Helen’s family, the Nigerian Psychological Association (NPA) have warned that it is important to see a professional psychologist for help whenever one feels emotionally stressed. The association emphasized that the need for psychologists in the country has become more pronounced with the current political and social crackdown by the Abacha administration.
